A 23-year-old Bulawayo resident has been sentenced to 14 months behind bars after unlawfully entering the house of a senior police officer at Victoria Falls Police quarters.
Trevor Ngwenya was convicted by Victoria Falls Magistrate Nyengeterai Bushu on two counts of aggravated unlawful entry following a series of housebreaking incidents earlier this month.
The court heard from prosecutor Portia Moyo that on 11 January 2026, Ngwenya, together with an accomplice, gained entry into the home of Gladys Mugoni, the Officer-in-Charge at ZRP Kazungula, by climbing through an open window.
The complainant was awakened by unusual sounds and discovered Ngwenya inside her house. When he realised he had been spotted, Ngwenya attempted to escape, causing damage in the process. Several household items, including dinner plates, a padlock and a toilet cistern, were damaged, with losses estimated at US$95.
Ngwenya was arrested at the scene, while his accomplice initially evaded capture but was later apprehended at his residence.
Further investigations revealed that Ngwenya had been involved in another break-in a day earlier in the Aerodrome area. On that occasion, he and two other men allegedly entered a house through an open window and stole a Huawei P-Smart cellphone worth US$100. The device was later recovered by police.
In court, Ngwenya admitted responsibility for both crimes and cleared his alleged accomplices of any involvement. As a result, the magistrate acquitted the other accused persons.
Magistrate Bushu sentenced Ngwenya to 14 months’ imprisonment, with the sentence on the second charge set to run concurrently.
