One victim, Busani Sibanda, recounted his terrifying experience of being attacked while searching for cow dung near the railway line. “They emerged from the maize crops and started attacking and chopping us with their machetes,” Sibanda said. The victims’ accounts paint a picture of chaos and fear, with the machete gangs seemingly targeting anyone in their path.
