Zimbabwe’s Power Crisis Deepens: Hwange Station Shut Down, Harare Substation in Flames

A catastrophic failure at Zimbabwe’s Hwange Power Station and a devastating fire at Harare’s Highfield Substation have plunged the country into a severe power crisis. On Sunday, May 4, 2025, acidic water corroded vital equipment at Hwange, forcing an emergency shutdown of the entire station.

According to the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC), a malfunctioning water treatment plant contaminated boiler systems, causing massive tube leaks across multiple units. All units were affected, prompting a swift shutdown to prevent further damage. Emergency repairs are underway, with engineers working tirelessly to restore power.

Hwange Power Station Update:

– Unit 1 is expected to be back online by Wednesday, May 7
– ZPC engineers aim to bring all five damaged units online by Friday, May 9

Meanwhile, a fire broke out at Harare’s Highfield Substation on Sunday evening, crippling power distribution to major areas of the capital. The blaze disrupted electricity supply to several suburbs, including Southerton, Workington, Mbare, Highfield, and Waterfalls. While makeshift load reconfigurations have restored power to some areas, others remain in the dark.

Affected Areas:

– Glen Norah
– Parts of Willowvale Industrial
– New Ardbenie

ZPC has assured the public that the situation is fluid and updates will follow as restoration efforts continue. The power crisis has raised concerns about the country’s infrastructure and its ability to meet electricity demands.

Stay tuned for further updates as this situation develops.
