Bail Granted to Journalist Blessed Mhlanga After Prolonged Detention

In a significant development, High Court Judge Justice Gibson Mandaza has granted bail to journalist Blessed Mhlanga, pending trial. The bail conditions include a $500 payment and a restriction on changing his place of residence.

Justice Mandaza’s ruling highlighted that the passage of time and the completion of investigations constituted a change in circumstances, warranting bail consideration. The judge also noted that Mhlanga’s permanent residence and the possibility of imposing conditions to prevent absconding were key factors in the decision.

The court observed that the magistrate had not fully considered the issue of interference, particularly since the investigation is complete and a trial date has been set. With bail granted, Mhlanga will be released pending his trial, under the specified conditions.

This decision comes after Mhlanga faced prolonged detention and multiple denied bail applications, raising concerns about press freedom and the treatment of journalists in Zimbabwe.
