A Harare businessman has allegedly pulled off a daring heist – swindling a partner out of US$46,080 worth of groceries. Because who doesn’t love a good grocery scam, right?
William Mikaye, a 46-year-old businessman, appeared in court facing allegations of theft of trust property. He allegedly signed delivery notes for groceries worth US$46,080, promising to sell them and remit the proceeds to his partner, Chengetai Gumbeze. But instead of sharing the loot, Mikaye allegedly pocketed the cash and left Gumbeze high and dry.
The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) got involved, and investigations revealed that Mikaye had indeed sold the goods and converted the funds for personal use. Because who needs business partners when you can just keep the money for yourself?
Mikaye was released on US$200 bail and is expected to return to court on May 13. Let’s hope justice is served, and Mikaye learns that it’s not okay to betray people’s trust – especially when it comes to groceries.
