Three men who allegedly mobilised a violent mob that attacked police officers at Dema Business Centre in Chief Seke on Christmas Day have been fined by the courts.
Jamaine Rubatika (42), Wisdom Rubatika (50) and Robson Madziva (32) appeared before the Chitungwiza Magistrates Court, where they were convicted of disturbing the peace after confronting police officers who were conducting a lawful patrol.
The court heard that the trio incited members of the public to turn against the officers, resulting in chaos that left one police officer injured and a police vehicle damaged.
Magistrate heard that the accused actively participated in the disorderly conduct, undermining efforts by law enforcement to maintain peace and public safety during the festive period.
Each of the three men was fined US$150, with the alternative of one month’s imprisonment if they fail to pay. An additional five months’ imprisonment was suspended on condition that they do not commit a similar offence in the future.
In a statement following the ruling, the National Prosecuting Authority emphasised that police operations are carried out to safeguard communities and enforce law and order.
“Any acts intended to obstruct police duties through violence, intimidation or incitement will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law,” the authority said.
