Zimbabwean Men Flying Solo- A Closer Look at the Latest Demographic Trends

A recent report from the Zimbabwe Demographic and Health Survey (ZDHS) reveals that nearly half of Zimbabwean men aged 15-49 are single. According to the survey, 45% of men in this age group have never been married, while 48% are married or living with a partner. In contrast, 62% of women in the same age group are in a union.

The report highlights a disparity in marriage rates between men and women. While 48% of men are married or in a relationship, 62% of women are in a union. Additionally, women experience a higher rate of divorce or separation, at 12%, compared to 6% for men.

The survey also sheds light on concerning health trends. While under-5 mortality rates have improved, infant mortality rates have increased to 56 deaths per 1,000 live births. Neonatal mortality is at its highest recorded level, with 37 deaths per 1,000 live births. Furthermore, the report notes that 3% of men aged 25-49 reported having sex before 15, and 25% before 18.

Despite these challenges, Zimbabwe has made progress in certain areas. The report notes improvements in contraceptive use, child nutrition, and reduced maternal mortality rates. According to ZimStat Director General Tafadzwa Bandama, these findings will inform national development priorities. Permanent Secretary Dr. Aspect Maunganidze emphasizes the importance of this data for policymakers and program managers, highlighting the need for continued efforts to address these challenges.
